Tokyo runs on its trains. Between Japan Railways (JR), the Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines, you can reach almost anywhere in the city quickly and on time.
IC cards: Suica and PASMO
The easiest way to ride is a rechargeable IC card such as Suica or PASMO. Tap it on the gate when you enter and again when you exit, and the fare is deducted automatically. The same card also works on buses and at many shops, lockers and vending machines. You can add Suica or PASMO to Apple Wallet or an Android phone and top it up with a card.
Finding your route
Use Google Maps or a transit app to plan trips. It shows the line, platform, departure time, transfers and cost. Station signs and announcements are usually available in English.
Taxis
Taxis are clean, safe and metered, but more expensive than trains. They are most useful late at night after the trains stop, or when you have luggage. Most accept IC cards and credit cards.
From the airport
Both airports connect easily to the city:
- Narita: the Narita Express (NEX) and the Keisei Skyliner reach central Tokyo, and Airport Limousine buses serve major hotels.
- Haneda: closer to the city, with quick connections by train, monorail and bus.
Buy airport train tickets and check current schedules on the official websites before you travel.
