Tokyo is increasingly cashless, but carrying some cash is still useful.
Cards and contactless
Credit cards and contactless payments are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, chain restaurants and convenience stores. IC cards such as Suica and PASMO also work as quick contactless payment at many shops.
When you still need cash
Some small restaurants, older shops, temples, markets and local bars accept cash only. It is wise to keep a few thousand yen on hand for these.
Getting cash
For foreign cards, the most reliable ATMs are at convenience stores (such as 7-Eleven) and post offices. They have English menus and accept most overseas cards.
Tax-free shopping
Many stores offer tax-free shopping for visitors on purchases above a set amount. Bring your passport and ask for the tax-free counter.
