Wi-Fi & Connectivity

Staying online in Tokyo: eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi and free hotspots.

Staying connected makes Tokyo far easier to navigate. There are three common options.

eSIM (easiest for most)

If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy a Japan data plan online before you arrive and activate it on landing. No physical SIM swap is needed.

Pocket Wi-Fi

A pocket Wi-Fi device gives several people fast internet on one connection. You can rent one online and collect it at the airport or have it delivered to your hotel. It is a good choice for families and groups.

Physical SIM

Travel SIM cards are sold at the airport and electronics stores if you prefer a traditional SIM.

Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available in many stations, cafes, convenience stores and shopping centers, but coverage can be patchy. A dedicated data plan is more reliable for maps and translation on the move.
