Sensō-ji Temple

Tokyo's historic heart beyond the Kaminarimon Gate.

Why we love itEven in one of the city's busiest tourist districts, an early-morning visit can still feel quiet, ritualistic and deeply connected to the past.

Sensō-ji is a major Buddhist temple at the centre of Asakusa, approached through the Kaminarimon Gate, Nakamise shopping street and Hozomon Gate. The movement from the busy street into the temple grounds reveals how worship, commerce and everyday city life continue to overlap in Tokyo.
